Data mapping and profiling for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Migration

The Problem

The implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is a daunting task for any organization. One of the nation’s largest public school systems — with over 10,000 active employees in a highly visible public sector industry — decided that it was mission critical to move forward with a cloud ERP solution to replace an antiquated on-premise ERP. After months of unsuccessful efforts to engage business owners on data migration activities, concerns about project readiness, and still without an official implementation partner, the client reached out to Propeller.

The Approach

Propeller joined the client’s IT team as a partner to assess the organization’s data structure, organize an approach to data migration activities, and engage business owners with data mapping and analysis. Through a series of data profiling and business owner engagement exercises, we were able to build out data configuration workbooks and map required data elements from source to target systems, work with the client and their implementation partner to build out and execute a data migration strategy, and establish a cleaner database and foundational data structure. When an unprecedented global health crisis put the project on pause, Propeller provided client resources with training and a project plan that could be executed during the pause, keeping project activities on track and users engaged.
